What changed: Seedance 1.0 → 2.0
The 1.0 → 2.0 jump (8 months) was the biggest leap in the Seedance line so far. 1.0 maxed out at 5-8 second clips, 720p, with no native audio — clips were silent by default and had to be dubbed in post. 2.0 added native synchronized stereo audio in a single pass: background music, sound effects, voiceover, and lip-sync, all generated alongside the video.
The other 2.0 headline change was the @-reference multimodal input: a single generation request can now reference up to 9 images, 3 videos, and 3 audio clips simultaneously. This is what makes 2.0 viable for consistent-character storytelling and product-shot recreation — both of which 1.0 struggled with because it could only condition on a single image at a time.
The third big change was distribution: 1.0 was consumer-only (Doubao, Jimeng), with no public API. 2.0 opened a pay-per-token public-beta API on Volcengine Ark on April 2, 2026, at roughly $0.14 per second of generated video. That made 2.0 the first Seedance version a non-Chinese developer could integrate into a product without going through Chinese consumer accounts.
What's expected: Seedance 2.0 → 2.1
In May 2026, ByteDance confirmed via international media (Pandaily) that Seedance 2.1 is in development, with a target of approximately 20% overall quality improvement over 2.0. No official release date has been published — Volcengine Ark still lists only 2.0, and ByteDance has not posted a 2.1 announcement on its official Seed research blog as of May 31, 2026.
The framing matters: ByteDance described 2.1 as a quality refresh, not an architectural overhaul. The @-reference input system, prompt syntax, aspect-ratio options, native audio pipeline, and pricing structure are all expected to carry over directly from 2.0. That makes 2.0 prompt-engineering work and workflow investment effectively forward-compatible.
What is not yet known: the exact dimensions of the "20% quality" claim (per-frame fidelity, motion coherence, prompt adherence, or some weighted composite), whether 2.1 will extend the maximum clip duration beyond 15 seconds, and whether pricing will tick up to cover the quality premium. We will update this section the moment any of those become public.

People also ask
The questions Google users most often pair with "Seedance 2.1" and "Seedance 3.0" queries.
When is Seedance 2.1 coming out?
ByteDance has not announced an official release date for Seedance 2.1 as of May 31, 2026. The company confirmed the model is in development via international media (Pandaily, May 2026) and described a target of ~20% quality improvement over 2.0, but no Volcengine Ark beta page, no API documentation, and no consumer surface has appeared. Based on ByteDance's historical cadence (1.0 in June 2025 → 2.0 in February 2026, roughly 8 months apart), the most plausible window is mid-to-late 2026, but this is inference, not reporting.
Is Seedance 2.1 available now?
No. Seedance 2.1 is not available through any channel as of May 31, 2026. The current production model is Seedance 2.0, which has been available via Volcengine Ark since April 2, 2026, and inside Doubao and Jimeng for Chinese consumers. Any site claiming to offer "Seedance 2.1 access" today is either using the 2.0 model with misleading branding or is unaffiliated with ByteDance entirely.
What's the difference between Seedance 2.0 and 2.1?
Per ByteDance's statements to Pandaily (May 2026), Seedance 2.1 is expected to deliver approximately 20% overall quality improvement over 2.0, while keeping the same multimodal architecture (@-reference inputs, native synchronized audio, 4-15 second clip range). It is positioned as a quality refresh, not an architectural overhaul. Specific deltas in resolution, duration, pricing, or new capabilities have not been disclosed.
Is there a Seedance 3.0?
No. ByteDance has not announced Seedance 3.0. There is no public roadmap, no timeline, no specifications, and no Volcengine Ark page for 3.0 as of May 31, 2026. Based on the company's release cadence, a 3.0 release would not be expected before 2027 at the earliest. Any specifications attributed to "Seedance 3.0" today are speculation.
Where do I get Seedance 2.1 API access?
There is no API access to Seedance 2.1 as of May 31, 2026 — the model has not been released. The canonical source for Seedance API documentation is Volcengine Ark (volcengine.com/product/ark); when 2.1 becomes available, the API will appear there first. The current Seedance 2.0 API on Ark uses pay-per-token billing at roughly $0.14 per second of generated video.
What is the latest version of Seedance?
The latest released version of Seedance is 2.0, launched on February 12, 2026, with a public-beta API on Volcengine Ark available since April 2, 2026. Seedance 2.1 has been confirmed by ByteDance as in development but has no official release date.

Frequently asked questions
How often does ByteDance release a new Seedance version?
Based on the public release history, roughly every 6-8 months. Seedance 1.0 launched in June 2025; an interim 1.5 Pro followed in late 2025; Seedance 2.0 launched on February 12, 2026. If 2.1 ships in mid-to-late 2026, the cadence would continue at the same pace. This is observed pattern, not an official commitment from ByteDance.
Should I wait for Seedance 2.1 or use 2.0 today?
For most use cases the answer is: use 2.0 today. The 2.0 model has native synchronized audio, 15-second clips, full multimodal input, and a stable public API — all the headline capabilities. The 2.1 improvement is described as a ~20% overall quality lift, which is meaningful but incremental, not a category change. Waiting an unknown number of months for incremental quality usually costs more in delayed output than it saves in render quality.
Will my Seedance 2.0 prompts and workflows still work in 2.1?
Almost certainly yes. ByteDance has positioned 2.1 as a quality refresh built on the 2.0 architecture, not a redesign. The @-reference input system, prompt syntax, aspect-ratio options, and pricing model are expected to carry over. Investing time in 2.0 prompt engineering now is not wasted work — it should transfer directly to 2.1 when it ships.
How will Seedance 2.1 be priced compared to 2.0?
Pricing has not been disclosed. Based on ByteDance's pattern with prior version upgrades (1.5 Pro stayed within the same pricing band as 1.0), the most likely outcome is that 2.1 will use the same Volcengine Ark pay-per-token model as 2.0 (~$0.14 per second of output), possibly with a small premium for the quality lift. Any specific 2.1 price you see quoted today is speculation.
Where will Seedance 2.1 be announced first?
The Volcengine Ark product page (volcengine.com/product/ark) and the ByteDance Seed research blog (seed.bytedance.com) are the two canonical channels for any new Seedance release. Wikipedia's Seedance 2.0 article and the official Doubao / Jimeng consumer surfaces typically update within a day of the Ark page going live. International media (Pandaily, TechNode, TechCrunch) usually report within hours.
Is "Seedance 2.5" or "Seedance Pro 2.0" a real version?
No. There is no Seedance 2.5 in development as of May 31, 2026. The "Pro" suffix was retired with the 2.0 release — there is no "Seedance 2.0 Pro" SKU; 2.0 is the only 2.x naming. Any site selling a "Seedance 2.5", "Seedance 2.0 Pro", or similar variant is using marketing names that do not match the official ByteDance product line.
If Seedance 3.0 has not been announced, why does this page mention it?
Because users actively search for "Seedance 3.0" — and an honest answer ("no such product exists yet, no public information") is more useful than letting that query route to misinformation. This page is the canonical "no, it does not exist" answer for the 3.0 query, with the same source-cited treatment we apply to confirmed versions.
How is this page kept up to date?
This page is reviewed at least every 14 days and updated immediately when ByteDance publishes new Seedance information. The "Last updated" date in the page header and the schema.org dateModified field both reflect the most recent factual update. If you spot a stale claim, the support contact on the homepage is the fastest way to flag it.
