What changed: Seedance 1.0 → 2.0

The 1.0 → 2.0 jump (8 months) was the biggest leap in the Seedance line so far. 1.0 maxed out at 5-8 second clips, 720p, with no native audio — clips were silent by default and had to be dubbed in post. 2.0 added native synchronized stereo audio in a single pass: background music, sound effects, voiceover, and lip-sync, all generated alongside the video.

The other 2.0 headline change was the @-reference multimodal input: a single generation request can now reference up to 9 images, 3 videos, and 3 audio clips simultaneously. This is what makes 2.0 viable for consistent-character storytelling and product-shot recreation — both of which 1.0 struggled with because it could only condition on a single image at a time.

The third big change was distribution: 1.0 was consumer-only (Doubao, Jimeng), with no public API. 2.0 opened a pay-per-token public-beta API on Volcengine Ark on April 2, 2026, at roughly $0.14 per second of generated video. That made 2.0 the first Seedance version a non-Chinese developer could integrate into a product without going through Chinese consumer accounts.

What's coming: Seedance 2.0 → 2.5

On June 23, 2026, ByteDance officially announced Seedance 2.5 at the Volcano Engine annual conference, jumping the version number directly past the rumored 2.1. Public API access via Volcengine Ark is scheduled for early July 2026, following the same rollout pattern as Seedance 2.0 (announced February 12, 2026; API public beta April 2, 2026).

Headline 2.5 capabilities over 2.0: native 4K output (not upscaled), up to 30-second single-pass generation (doubles 2.0's 15-second ceiling), up to 50 reference inputs per request (vs 2.0's 9 images + 3 videos + 3 audio), and region-level editing for fine-grained adjustments to generated video. ByteDance simultaneously updated Seedance 2.0 itself to support native 4K at the same conference.

The 2.5 release is positioned as a capability expansion built on the 2.0 architecture, not a redesign. The @-reference input system, prompt syntax, aspect-ratio options, and core multimodal pipeline carry over directly. That makes 2.0 prompt-engineering work and workflow investment effectively forward-compatible to 2.5 on day one of the July 2026 API launch.

What is not yet disclosed: official 2.5 API pricing (TBD at launch), exact computational cost per second of 4K vs 720p output, and whether 2.5 will retain the same Volcengine Ark pay-per-token model as 2.0 (~$0.14/sec). We will update this section the moment ByteDance publishes pricing.

Seedance 3.0 has no announced release date.

As of June 26, 2026, ByteDance has not published any roadmap, specifications, or timeline for Seedance 3.0. There is no Volcengine Ark placeholder, no ByteDance Seed research blog announcement, and no consumer surface for a Seedance 3.0 model. Frequently asked questions

How often does ByteDance release a new Seedance version?

Based on the public release history, roughly every 4-8 months. Seedance 1.0 launched in June 2025; an interim 1.5 Pro followed in late 2025; Seedance 2.0 launched on February 12, 2026; Seedance 2.5 was announced on June 23, 2026 (~4 months after 2.0). The cadence has been accelerating, but ByteDance has not committed to a public release schedule.

Should I wait for Seedance 2.5 or use 2.0 today?

Use 2.0 today unless your project genuinely needs native 4K, 30-second clips, or 50 reference inputs. The 2.0 API is shipping and stable; the 2.5 public API is scheduled for early July 2026 but has no confirmed launch date. Even after 2.5 ships, 2.0 will remain available in parallel and shares the same prompt syntax, @-reference input system, and aspect-ratio options — prompt-engineering work on 2.0 transfers directly to 2.5 on day one.

Will my Seedance 2.0 prompts and workflows still work in 2.5?

Yes. ByteDance has positioned 2.5 as a capability expansion built on the 2.0 architecture, not a redesign. The @-reference input system, prompt syntax, aspect-ratio options, and core multimodal pipeline carry over. The new 2.5 capabilities (native 4K, 30-second duration, 50 reference inputs, region-level editing) are additive — your existing 2.0 prompts will continue to work, and you can opt into the new features as needed.

How will Seedance 2.5 be priced compared to 2.0?

Pricing has not been disclosed and will be confirmed at the public API launch in early July 2026. Seedance 2.0 currently bills at roughly $0.14 per second of generated video on Volcengine Ark. Any specific 2.5 price you see quoted today is speculation.

Where will Seedance 2.5 launch the public API?

Volcengine Ark (volcengine.com/product/ark) is the canonical channel for any new Seedance release. The ByteDance Seed research blog (seed.bytedance.com) typically posts a launch announcement the same day. Wikipedia's Seedance 2.0 article and the official Doubao / Jimeng consumer surfaces typically update within a day of the Ark page going live. International media (Pandaily, TechNode, TechCrunch) usually report within hours.

Is "Seedance Pro 2.0" or "Seedance 2.7" a real version?

No. The official ByteDance Seedance line as of June 26, 2026 is: 1.0, 1.5 Pro, 2.0, and the announced 2.5. There is no "Seedance 2.0 Pro," no "Seedance 2.7," and no "Seedance 3.0." The "Pro" suffix was retired with the 2.0 release. Any site selling a variant with a different number or suffix is using marketing names that do not match the official ByteDance product line.

If Seedance 3.0 has not been announced, why does this page mention it?

Because users actively search for "Seedance 3.0 release date" — and an honest answer ("no announced release date, no public information") is more useful than letting that query route to misinformation. This page is the canonical "no, there is no Seedance 3.0 release date" answer for the 3.0 query, with the same source-cited treatment we apply to confirmed versions like 2.0 and 2.5.

How is this page kept up to date?

This page is reviewed at least every 14 days and updated immediately when ByteDance publishes new Seedance information. The "Last updated" date in the page header and the schema.org dateModified field both reflect the most recent factual update. The most recent update on June 26, 2026 reflects the Seedance 2.5 announcement at the Volcano Engine conference (June 23, 2026).
